Kids Protection Plan

What would happen ...

 . . . if for some terrible reason, you and your partner were not able to get home to the kids?  Where would they go?  Who would take care of them?  What does "nearest" living relative mean?  Ultimately, who decides? 

     Typically, the police take the children into "protective custody" and turn them over to a government office like the Department of Children and Families, or Children's Protective Services.  On the worst night of their lives, your children could end up "temporarily sheltered" in the foster care system rather than being held by someone who knows and loves them.
